Funabashiya opened in 1886 in what was then Tsunohazu 1-chome, now Shinjuku 3-chome, originally selling roasted sweet potatoes before becoming a tempura specialist. For over 130 years it has served Edo-style tempura fried in specially pressed sesame oil at the same location.
