Founded in 1532 on the Hokkoku Kaido road in the post town of Kinomoto, Yamaji Shuzo is one of the oldest sake breweries still operating in Japan. Alongside its Hokkoku Kaido sake, it brews kuwazake, a sweet mulberry-leaf liqueur said to have been loved by novelist Toson Shimazaki, sold at its roadside shop.
